Thailand Shopping

The land of smiles that is Thailand is not only popular for its friendly faces, gorgeous sand beaches and colorful culture.

The country is also known to be one the world’s paradise for shopaholics.

Thailand is a great place to exercise a shopaholic’s feet and arms, and needless to mention, wallets for all those great buys that they can find.

Thailand abounds with flashy boutiques, numerous novelty shops, large shopping malls, wide-ranging department stores and lively street markets even at night.

All these establishments are filled with interesting items at very affordable prices.

Probably everything you want can be found in these stores, from clothes, jewelries and accessories, to techie gadgets, to kitchen and house wares, to any trinket one can possibly think of. In the cities of Chiang Mai and Bangkok, bustling night markets are the places to look for.

Shopping in Thailand

One of the most famous night markets is Bangkok’s Chatuchak Night Market. It is said to be the largest market in Thailand and also argued to be the largest in the world.

Its 35 acres of land house approximately 15,000 stalls. And reportedly, around 250,000 to 300,000 shoppers go to this market every Saturday and Sunday. Maybe one reason for the busy traffic of visitors in this market is its strategic location.

It is conveniently located near the MRT’s Kamphaengphet station and is just a 5-minute stroll from the Skytrain’s Mo Chit station. Another reason may be because most of its stores are open only on weekends.

Another popular night market in Bangkok was the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, otherwise known as the “Night Plaza”. This night market was equally abundant in products but was closed down in 2007 when the property lease expired. As with most countries, Thailand also has its own Chinatown.

Like most Chinatowns, the one in Bangkok is a center for China novelty shops and food stalls. Exquisite China wares can be bought here at very affordable and negotiable prices.

Now when it comes to world class shopping malls, Thailand is proud of its fabulous shopping complex called Siam Paragon. This mall refers to itself as the pride of Bangkok. Siam Paragon has all signature brands under its roof, such as Shu Uemura, Shiseido, Guess, Bon Valentine, Beverly Hill Polo Club, Louis Feraud, Pierre Cardin, and Guy Laroche, to name just a few.

Another luxury shopping mall is the Emporium located at the center of Sukhumvit Road.

This mall also houses international brands like in Siam Paragon. Popular brands like Chanel, Tod’s and Cartier opened their first outlet in this country at the Emporium. Understandably, because the Emporium is Thailand’s very first luxury mall.
